Here’s a paper from the InfoVis conference last year that looked at some of the visual metaphors people used on whiteboards. I think there’s some interesting insights to be had into how people organize and communicate information when they’re given basically no constraints other than color and being limited to 2D. These insights might help spawn some ideas on how to design tools to help people work out problems while learning.
